Although first decried in the 19th contrary by a botanist, David Douglas for whom it is ultimately named, this plant had long been known to the native Americans along the coast from present day California up to southern Oregon, where they would use the leaves for such things as bags, snares and fishing nets. However, since cattle find the leaves bitter, it is considered as a noxious weed in pasture lands.
