While the prominent plant appears to be a type of tree, IT's a type of cactus, as can be seen by the projection. The projection is a century plant. about every 100 years a cactus will produce one of these, and this one is weird-looking. The buds will ultimately fall and become the next generation of cacti. The plant is seen in a beautiful setting and the surrounding growth belies the fact that this a quiet and lovely desert
