The colonial city of Valparaíso, Chile, enjoyed a privileged status during the development of maritime trade routes in the 19th-century, when it was one of the main seaport cities in the South Pacific. Back then it was known as The Jewel of the Pacific and “Little San Francisco”. The opening of the Panama Canal marked the beginning of its decline. Nowadays its historic quarter has been designed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. However, funding is needed to preserve its heritage, much of which is still in a dire conservation state.
