Historic building of the Primary School Gheorghe Asachi in Iasi, Romania. At the beginning of the 19th century, on the background of economic and social transformations, there was a need for educational institutions in Romania. Gheorghe Asachi, a Moldavian, later Romanian prose writer, poet, painter, historian, dramatist and translator, was the one who opened this path. For more than 40 years, he organized and led the education, being the builder of the national education movement in the first half of the century. The first primary school had two classes that were made in two school years: the first was called the `elementary class` and the second `normal class`, after which the school was also called, for a long time, the normal school. In 1830, Asachi signs a new announcement that introduces the gymnasium course, lasting four years.
