The Golden Gate Bridge as a suspension bridge has a pair of cables running between the twin towers above and the roadway, suspended below it. This cable is not just one cable but a series of many cables held together and inside a wrapping. Since this cable is constantly exposed to the air and temperature fluctuations, this will cause the cable to continuously expand and contract. And while that is going on, the constant traffic below is causing vibrations that shoot up the cable. Over time all of this has an effect on the cables ability to maintain its tensions. Special bands are in place, held on by a series of bolts, that are tightened as needed by the work crews.
