The chamois Rupicapra rupicapra is a species of goat-antelope native to mountains in Europe, including the European Alps, the Pyrenees, the Carpathians, the Tatra Mountains, the Balkans, parts of Turkey, the Caucasus, and the Apennines. Some subspecies of chamois are strictly protected in the EU under the European Habitats Directive. The chamois along with sheep and goats are in the goat-antelope subfamily Caprinae of the family Bovidae. There are two species of chamois in the genus Rupicapra: R. rupicapra and R. pyrenaica The species R. pyrenaica is categorized into three subspecies: R. p. pyrenaica Pyrenean chamois, which occurs in the Pyrenees; R. p. parva Cantabrian Chamois, which occurs in the Cantabrian mountains, and R. p. ornata Abruzzese Chamois, which occurs in the Apennines. The Posets massif is encompassed by the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park is located in the province of Huesca, Aragón, northeastern Spain. In includes the Aneto peak, which at 3404 m is the highest summit in the Pyrenees.
