Saint Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of San Francisco. This sculptural depiction, carved out of a single, twenty-ton block of granite, took the great artist Benny Bufano two years to complete. It then sat, hidden, in storage for the next 27 years. Finally coming to the Bay in 1955, but with no permanent home, in 1958 the Longshoreman offered a permanent home with its own garden.
