A member of the Lily family that was first mentioned in Europe in 1571, it has been and is still used in Chinese medicine for the past 2,000 years. Although cultivated for this purpose, the wild form is still the most desirable to the point of being used nearly to extinction. The popularity throughout Europe spread quickly, as many writers and painters used Fritillaria in their works, from Shakespeare to Jacopo Ligozzi.
