The Concordia Club with its founding going back to 1864 San Francisco of German Jews, led by the Levi Strauss, it was for social and athletic activities. They moved into this Van Ness Street building in 1891, which held a library, swimming pool and later, regulation sized basketball court. In 1939 the Concordia merged with another Jewish mens club, the Argonaut. By the 1960`s this club, like other similar clubs across the country, had to open their doors to non-jews, and finally to woman. Still the membership roll has kept declining to the point where a much smaller building will suffice, so this one was recently sold.
