The act of bathing for cleaning oneself goes back to about 3000 BC. It was associated with sacred acts, so required before going into the sacred areas. Depending on the culture, the bath water was to be either heated, or left cold. During the periods of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the very wealthy class had their own, private baths, but would still visit the public baths, as these were the centers of social activities. As indoor plumbing became more and more common in private homes, so did the taking of the private baths, to the point of shunning the public baths, for modern modesty. It can still be a place for relaxation, but is no longer for social gathering.
