The pygmy is a very small owl, as are all representatives of the genus of sparrow owls. The length of its body is 15–19 cm, the wingspan is 35–40 cm, the length of the wing is 9–11 cm, and the weight is 55–80 g. The females are larger than the males. Top grayish-brown or dark brown, with white mottles, which are smaller on the head and larger on the back, and a whitish transverse pattern on the fly-wheel and steering. Bottom white with brown longitudinal stripes. On the sides of the goiter and chest dark with white markings spot. The tail is gray-brown with five narrow white longitudinal stripes. The head is small, round, slightly flat, there are no “ears”. The front disc is not clear. The face is gray with small brown specks, around each eye are concentric white and brown rings, and above the eyes are short white eyebrows. The iris is yellow. The beak is large, yellow; claws are strong, steeply curved, black or yellow, but in this case the tips at the claws are of dark color. Toes are densely feathered to claws.
