Male And Female Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Archilocus colubris, meet in mid air. Procreation resembles a battle where the male dive bombs the female until she is helpless on the ground and then he has his way with her. During the attack phase of mating the male`s red gorget shines like the headlight from an oncoming train. Once he has bred with her she may eat from garden without his attacks.
