The Pashkov House was built in 1784–1786 by order of Lieutenant Commander Semenov Life Guards Regiment P.E. Pashkov, son of the orderly Peter I. Presumably, the architect was V. I. Bazhenov. The house has become one of the most beautiful buildings of Moscow in the style of classicism. At the beginning of the XIX century the house stood in desolation. In 1839, it was acquired by the Treasury for Moscow University. In 1843 the Moscow Noble Institute was located here. In 1852, the institute was transformed into the 4th City Gymnasium. In 1861, the building was transferred to the collections and library of the Rumyantsev Museum. In 1921, the museum’s collections were taken out of the house, and the library of the museum remained in it, supplemented after the revolution 1917 by more than four hundred abandoned, ownerless, and nationalized book collections. The library was renamed the famous State Library of the USSR named after V. I. Lenin now the Russian State Library. The building houses a department of manuscripts, a musical department and a department of cartographic publications. The building is very beautiful inside. Excursions are held in the Pashkov House.
