The beck is more or less a hollow circle, and is like a large pond when it has water in it. It is situated next to St Mary`s Church and goes back to at least the 1600`s when they used to have Ducking Stools on the edge of it for people who had done wrong in the town and were to be publicly disgraced. St Mary`s Church can be traced back to the 11th Century, of which only the lower part of the tower and the north aisle arcade survive. The majority of the building is in the Early English style. The windows date to the 14th and 15th centuries with the window glass assembled in the 17th century. It included chancel monuments dating to 1626 and 1729. The porch was restored in 1938.
