The system of caves of San Giovanni originates from the corrosive action of the homonymous small river on the limestone rock of Monte Acqua. As attested by the archaeological finds found inside and outside the two entrances, the cave has been frequented since prehistoric times. In the nuragic age, 2nd millennium BC, these caves were a secret way to reach the inside of the rich mining region where precious metals were extracted and marketed throughout the Mediterranean area. Today the cave is a tourist attraction as a natural monument
