A native Frenchman born in 256, Sebastião joined the Roman army and became captain of the praetorian guard, the emperor`s trust. Sebastian, however, was a Christian and, whenever he could, visited the brothers in the faith who were imprisoned, bringing them spiritual comfort and consolation. It was against persecution and torture committed against Christians. Therefore, discovered by Emperor Maximian, he was arrested, tortured and forced to renounce his Christian faith. Refusing to obey, the emperor condemned him to a slow and exemplary death.
