Abstraction from Latin abstrahere, `to move away, subtract, separate` is a mental operation destined to conceptually isolate a particular property or function of an object, and to think what it is, ignoring other properties of the object in question.
One of the first known reflections on abstraction is due to Aristotle, who introduced the term aphaireis that was translated into Latin as abstractio. Against Plato, who believed in a direct intuition of the essences or ideas, Aristotle considers that every universal idea is based on empirical data. Thus, the idea or concept of the table, for example, comes from the process of comparing various furniture objects that share similar characteristics that we can `abstract` and keep with what they have in common. What makes a table a table is not that it is square, round, rectangular, wood, marble, green, yellow or red, but that we abstract from these objects its color, its shape, the material from which they are made and we are left with the idea or the concept of a table. This concept, then, comes from the mental process of abstraction.
