The caves of Castellana, extended for about 3 kilometers, open up to 330 m above sea level less than 500 meters from the town of Castellana. The entire municipal territory is characterized by calcareous rocks composed essentially of calcium carbonate, mainly of the limestone type of Altamura. The natural entrance to the caves is a huge sixty-meter deep chasm called the Grave. The visit to the public winds along a scenario for about 1 km. The longer route takes two hours and runs for 3 km, among caves and chasms to which mythological or fantastic names have been given.
