Italy. Matera. The Sassi. Tipical old houses with external staircase. An external masonry staircase connects an internal courtyard with the house on the upper floor. The dwellings, churches and other places of the Sassi, mostly consist of hypogeum environments dug into the rock and of rooms and spaces, connected to them, built outside with the stone blocks obtained during the excavation phase. These external volumes, built in a seemingly chaotic and disorderly manner, make the Sassi of Matera an absolutely suggestive and fantastic place and very similar to a Christmas Crib.
