Bonnet macaque, also known as ââ¬Ëzatiââ¬â¢ Macaca radiata, is native only to peninsular India, bounded by the Godavari and Tapti Rivers in the north. It is most common in the Western Ghats and is a diurnal animal, living mostly on trees. It is 35ââ¬â60 cm long plus a tail of 35ââ¬â68 cm, the males weighing 5.5 to 9.0 kg and females 3.5 to 4.5 kg.
It is omnivorous, feeding on fruits, nuts, seeds, flowers, invertebrates, and cereals. It is an opportunistic eater and in many areas it lives in close proximity to humans, especially near Temples, eating food given by tourists and often raiding crops and houses nearby.
It lives in groups, within a well defined hierarchy.
Seen in the picture are two young macaques grooming each other, a common trait among these monkeys.
Picture taken on September 13, 2019, near Shivasamudram waterfalls, Karnataka, India, using a Canon DSLR EOS 550D at a focal length of 300 mm, f/8, 1/500 sec.
