The pirate ship `Notorious`, anchored in the middle of the Clarence River near Maclean, as thick smoke from severe bushfires blankets the valley. Weak sunlight creates an eerie golden glow, and visibility is reduced due to the hazy conditions. On the far shore, the small town of Ashby prepares to evacuate, as the threat of fire increases; a state of emergency has been declared. Fires have ravaged the area for weeks, due to the worst drought in over a century, and fuelled by hot dry northerly winds.
