Onion is the popular name of the plant whose scientific name is Allium cepa. In older taxonomic systems, it belonged to the family of Lilies and subfamily of allioids - more recent taxonomists include it in the family of Amaryllidaceae. The term also refers to its bulb bulb, in Brazil consisting of scaly, layered leaves. Its flowers are arranged in umbel. Young plants, with a poorly developed bulb and without flower, are also called cebolo
