Ash Wednesday is a Christian holy day of prayer and fasting. It is preceded by Carnival Tuesday and is the first day of Lent, which is the six weeks of penance before Easter. It is the first day of Lent in the Catholic and Anglican liturgical calendars, as well as of various Protestant, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyteran and some Baptist denominations. It is observed by Anglicans, most Roman Catholics of Latin rite, Lutherans, Methodists, Moravians, Nazarenes and independent Catholics as well as many of the Reformed Baptists. It is celebrated forty days before Palm Sunday, day after which Holy Week begins. The ash, whose imposition constitutes the characteristic rite of this Christmas celebration
