The first written mention of the village dates back to 1102. A battle took place near the town on 18 June 1815, in which the French army of Napoleon Bonaparte was definitively defeated by the combined Prussian, English, Dutch, Nassau and Brunswick troops. The battle marked the end of Napoleon`s day-to-day empire.
