The first written mention of the village dates back to 1102. A battle took place near the town on 18 June 1815, in which the French army of Napoleon Bonaparte was definitively defeated by the combined Prussian, English, Dutch, Nassau and Brunswick troops. The battle marked the end of Napoleon`s day-to-day empire. In the years 1820-1826 was built near the village Lion Hill at the place where it was during the battle muskete knocked off horse William II. Dutch. It is an artificial hill 43 m high with a circumference of 520 m. 226 steps lead to its top. Here is placed on a stone pedestal a lion statue symbolizing the victory of the allied troops. The statue weighs 28 tons and was cast in Liège. The memorial serves as a viewing point from where the visitor can view the battlefield.
