The Lisbon earthquake of 1755, as well as the tsunamis and fires it caused, destroyed many buildings in Lisbon. King Jose I and his Prime Minister Sebastian Jose Pombal hired many architects to rebuild the city, especially the Baixa region. The architecture of the Pombalino style is secular, utilitarian, imbued with the ideology of pragmatism. He is the heir to the `simple style`, includes some elements of classicism and details in the Rocco style. The Marquis of Pombal imposed strict conditions on the restoration of the city. The architectural models of the buildings were tested by troops marching around them, which created the effect of an earthquake, making the pombalo one of the first earthquake-resistant architectural structures. The shopping area, Augusta Street and Avenida da Liberdade are the most famous monuments in this style. The trading area received a regular, symmetrical shape in the spirit of the newly rebuilt Baisha district.
