Modern Akhaltsikhe was founded at the beginning of the 12th century AD. From 1579 to 1829 the city belonged to the Ottoman Empire. Rabat fortress was built by the Turks, and recently it was restored. The ascetic one-story buildings of the fortress probably served as a home for the elite soldiers of the Ottoman Empire - the Janissary.
