Residential buildings in the south of the Yangtze River in Suzhou in China is an important part of traditional Chinese folk houses. Water towns in Jiangsu settle down in the layout of “the front street and the back river”. However, the common feature of traditional folk houses, whether in the south or the north, mostly face to south against north to get utmost of internal lighting.Bearing timber beams and retaining walls of brick, stone and earth. With carved beams , painted roof and decorative cornice the front door of the residence is mostly arranged on the central axis facing the main room for the hall, behind the yard often built a two-story building.The small courtyard that encloses by quadrangle rooms is called courtyard commonly making usage of day-lighting and drainage .with rainwater from the roof slope flowing into the courtyard from all sides, this residential layout is commonly known as `four waters joining together”.’ Residential buildings in the south of the Yangtze River in Suzhou in China Are roughly the same as the quadrangle courtyards in the north, except that the layout is compact and the courtyards cover small area, so as to adapt to the characteristics of high population density and less farmland.
