The wolf Canis lupus is the largest predator in the dog family Canidae. Wolves mostly live in family groups, technically called packs. Main prey are medium to large ungulates in most regions. The species has been common in several subspecies throughout Europe, much of Asia, including the Arabian Peninsula and Japan, and North America since the late Pleistocene. Basically, the wolf resembles a large domestic dog, with the trunk being longer and the chest being taller but narrower compared to similarly built domestic dogs. Wolves are comparatively slim with long legs. The head is relatively large with a broad forehead, long snout and short, erect, densely haired ears that point forward. The eyes start at an angle and are also oriented towards the front. The bushy tail is about a third of the length of the head and body.
