The red fox Vulpes vulpes is the only Central European representative of the fox and is therefore mostly referred to as `the fox`. It is the most common wild dog in Europe. Of all wild predators, red foxes have the largest geographic range: they can live north of the Arctic Circle as well as in almost tropical areas. In North America they occur from the Aleutian Islands to Newfoundland - with the exception of Arizona, South Florida and a strip from Alberta to Mexico. Red foxes colonize Eurasia from Ireland to the Bering Sea. In the fables, the fox is mostly depicted as a sneaky, clever guy. There he has the name Reineke Fuchs.
