Lycans are shapeshifters. They are people who do not mutate into a werewolf due to the full moon, but can consciously switch their wolf appearance on and off. They are also not separate from their human consciousness, as is the case with werewolves. The next day after the full moon, werewolves cannot remember what they were up to the night before. Lycans are to a certain extent beings who take on the form of a wolf, but still have the intelligence of a human being, coupled with the power of a wolf.
