While Poppi is now off the beaten track and little known, in the 13th and 14th centuries it played an important role in the events of Tuscany between Arezzo and Florence and thus between Ghibellines and Guelen. Poppi is crowned by the castle of the Counts Guidi Castello dei Conti Guidi, which dominates the city and the Casentino. In 1441, and thus comparatively late, Poppi came under the rule of the Republic of Florence, thus the expulsion of the Guidi was at the same time at the extreme end of the old feudal lordships in Tuscany.
