Lake level extremes either high or low can affect shoreline habitat. Ability to manage Cayuga Lake is difficult in part because it is dependent on the level of the Seneca River into which Cayuga Lake drains. Cayuga Lake water levels are managed by a dam at Mud Lock at the north end of the Lake. Cayuga Lake is the longest of central New York's glacial Finger Lakes and is the second largest in surface area and second largest in volume. It is just under 40 miles long. Its average width is 1.7 miles and it is 3.5 mi wide at its widest point near Aurora. It is approximately 435 ft deep at its deepest point.
