St. Alexander Nevsky cathedral is the biggest orthodox church in Bulgaria located in its capital - Sofia. It is built in Neo-Byzantine style occupies an area of 3170 sq. m and can hold 5000 people inside. The cathedral was created in honour to the soldiers who died during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 as a result of which Bulgaria was liberated from Ottoman rule. It is named after Alexander Nevsky - a Russian prince proclaimed a saint and a patron of tsar Alexander II of Russia during who's rule the aforementioned war was declared.
