Together with the Bieslandse Bos, De Balij forms a steadily growing piece of 'green lung' of 15 kilometers between Zoetermeer and Delft. De Balij covers 360 hectares. The Balij en Biesland forest' is part of the Randstad Green Structure, a large contiguous area within the Randstad, which is being constructed to prevent the cities from growing together through housing, industry and greenhouse horticulture. In addition to recreation and nature development, wood production also plays a role.The first trees were planted in 1992. The forest was later expanded to include beech, oak, ash and alder.Eighty hectares of De Balij must develop into a natural forest. Nature is allowed to do its own thing here. In the middle of the natural forest is a wild, open area maintained by Galloway cattle.
