A chickadee in a bird feeder. The Great tit Latin: Parus major is a widespread bird of the family Titaceae, the order Passerineae. In the wild, it is found in a variety of forests, usually in open areas, edges, along the banks of reservoirs. They are generally non-migratory birds, and most great tits do not migrate except in very harsh winters. Usually, this species includes many subspecies. The Great Tit remains the largest and most numerous of all the species of the genus tit, particularly in Russia. The tit is distinguished by its black head and neck, conspicuous white cheeks, olive top and yellow underparts, with some variations among the numerous subspecies. In summer, it feeds mainly on small insects and other invertebrates. In winter, it eats a wider range of foods.
