Lichens on trees are a unique organism because they are actually a symbiotic relationship between two organisms - fungi and algae. The fungus grows on the tree and can accumulate the moisture that algae need. Algae, in turn, can create food from solar energy that feeds on fungi. Lichen on tree bark is completely harmless to the tree itself. The roots similar to the roots allow them to attach, but do not go deep enough to harm the tree in any way. Many people believe that when a tree gets sick and has lichens, tree lichens are the cause of the disease. This is impossible and most likely the lichen was there long before the tree got sick.
