Working under compressed air, men dug through the mud until they reached the solid rock at the bed of the estuary. The Forth Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge across the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland. Completed in 1890, Designed by the English engineers Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker. Geotechnical engineering, a caisson is a watertight retaining structure used to work on the foundations of a bridge pier, for the construction of a concrete dam, or for the repair of ships. Caissons are constructed in such a way that the water can be pumped out, keeping the work environment dry.
