Great spotted Woodpecker -Dendrocopos Major. High In The Tree Canopy of a British Woodland. This striking black and white bird is about the size of a Blackbird or starling. Having a distinct bouncing flight, this bird tries to avoid observation by hiding on the side away from an observer whether it be tree trunk or branch. This enhances its reputation as being extremely difficult to spot. Its presence is usually announced by its clear and distinct drumming activity in Spring when birds are entering the breeding season. Males have an obvious red patch on the back of the head. A joyful bird to spot.
