In flight they have a conspicuous white wingbar and tail has a white terminal bar and white outer feathers. The young has an incomplete, brown upper chest band, the lower band has the black feathers with narrow white tips; more uniform coloured on the head with dull white and dark brown; upper parts brown withfeathers edged buff. Nestling boldly patterned. Distribution: Whole of Africa,south of the Sahara and in Malagasy. Habits: Dispersed on the edge of inland lakes, pans and rivers where there is mud, clear sandy or hard soil, shoreline but sometimes also on the seashore. Occurs singly on family parties, occasionaly gathering in loose flocks of up to 40. Often heard first then seen, standing still with body sloping forward, bobbing head and body with each call. Food: Insects and their larvae, worms, crustacea and small molluscs. Voice: High pitched whistle wick-wick.
