One of the most striking spring wildflowers in Eastern North America is the trillium. There are five varieties, with colors ranging through white, yellow, and reddish purple (or purplish red if you prefer). The most common variety in the Maritimes and New England seems to be that last variety, the purple trillium. Perennials, they like acidic soil and flourish in shade, each a single blossom atop a stem-like scape, cradled in the middle of three leaf-like bracts. Because their blooms tend to droop, they can sometimes take you by surprise, popping suddenly into your awareness where a moment before, your field of vision had held nothing but browns and greens and shadows.
