The lemon grows as a small to medium sized evergreen tree. Compared to other citrus plants, they are fast-growing and large. Especially young shoots are covered with small, thin thorns. Shoots are reddish, buds are also pink, and the otherwise white petals are pink to purple on the underside. The stem leaves are oblong-ovate to broadly lanceolate, acuminate, slightly serrated or notched on the margin. The petiole is somewhat broadened winged, and the leaf blade is clearly separated from the petiole unifoliate leaf.
