Florianópolis is consideres a Magic Island. It does not have the name, “Magic Island”, for nothing. There are several legends, as well as stories about the charm that the place exerts on visitors and residents. Witches, ghosts, lights, werewolf, and many other characters make up the popular imagination. They are verses and prose by poets, musicians and writers, such as Franklin Cascaes, or told by the lacemakers and fishermen of Dame of Exile. It's also popular for the wildlife areas and the nature. In the aquatic environment are molluscs (such as cockles, mussels and oysters), crustaceans (crabs and shrimp), fish (mullet, sea bass, sole, manjuba, conger). It also have mammals in this environment, such as otters, dolphins and whales, and reptiles such as yellow paprika alligator. In the terrestrial environment there are more than 30 species of lizards and snakes, such as the jararaca, the jararacuçu and the coral. Not to mention the outstanding mammals in the species of possums, bats, capuchin monkeys, coati and others. Regarding birds, there are approximately 170 species on the island, with emphasis on the Martim Pescador Verde, the symbol bird of Florianópolis. The Island of Santa Catarina has an amazing biodiversity and is very easy to access. It's a rich open-air geography class. You can walk through the mangrove swamps that serve as a nursery and food source for different species of animals, or discover the Atlantic Forest environments on its numerous islands. In the urban center, it is possible to make contact with the Atlantic Forest, which is visible in the Forest of the Hospital de Charidade da Irmandade do Senhor Jesus dos Passos, an area covering around 200,000 square meters. The vegetation of the Island of Santa Catarina is constituted by implanted pastures, pioneer secondary vegetation, capoeirinha, capoeira, capoeirões (around 50% of the current vegetation), secondary forest and primary forest (around 2 to 3% of the vegetal area).
