The term flower, in its most common meaning of a bright visible structure, encompasses a wide range of structures that are not physically flowers in the botanical sense. Sunflowers and daisies, for example, are clusters of numerous little blooms that appear to be a single flower (a capitulum, a type of pseudanthium), yet they are still called flowers in the broad sense. Similarly, the botanical definition of flower includes many structures that the average person would not consider flowers, such as willow tree catkins or the downy blooms found atop a cattail stem.
