The Monarch butterfly, or Milkweed butterfly, Danaus plexippus, is the most common butterfly throughout North America, and with its well known migration, by the millions, is also known down into Mexico. It is the Eastern Monarch that is known to travel the many thousands of miles down to Mexico, while the Western normally only goes down to Southern California. Despite these differences, there seems to be no genetic differences between them. Although the adult Monarchs consume the nectar of many types of flowers, its the larvae that consume only milkweed, which is where the name come. The Monarch name if named for Englands King William 3rd, who was known as `William of Orange`. As seen at the top of Strawberry Hill in Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park, 7 April 2022.
