The easily recognized Peace symbol at Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park, has a strong, and misunderstood, history. When the symbol was first introduced in 1958, some people saw an anti Christian, Pagan message, it actually stands for Nuclear Disarmament. By the end of WW2 and the drastic rise in nuclear arms around the world, Britain formed a Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. In Semaphore, that is, the use of flags or other objects to communicate over great distances silently, when the person has one hand straight down and the other straight up, is the letter `D`, and with both hands at a down angle, the letter `N, combined represents `Nuclear Disarmament`. It was placed in a circle, like the Radioactive symbol is.
