The Common ivy, Hedera helix, is an unusually attractive planting, and for several reasons. For one, the common, multi lobed leaf is only the juvenile leaf. The mature leaf is unlobed, almost heart shaped. The deep purple colored berries are good food source for birds, but toxic to humans. However, a cough syrup can be made from it. Many older buildings can look more attractive covered under ivy, and it will keep the building warmer and dryer. However, it can also severely damage the building. It is also now considered invasive in more and more areas.
