The humidity, cool temperatures, and rainfall of the central highlands of Sri Lanka provide the favorable climate necessary for the production of high-quality tea. On the other hand, the tea produced under the high temperature and high rainfall in areas like Matara, Galle, Ratnapura has a high astringent taste. At lower altitudes, the amount of biomass produced by the tea plant itself is relatively high. Such teas are most popular in Middle Eastern countries. James Taylor, a British tea planter who came to Sri Lanka in 1852, introduced the tea industry to Sri Lanka in 1867. Since the 1970s, tea cultivation has become popular under smallholders.
