The Heineman Building, or 130 Bush as it is now known, is an unusual building in a city awash with unusual buildings. Even when it opened in 1910, it was one of the first to do so in the area, so soon after The Great Quake. With no signage, it is very easy to assume this very thin building is just part of one of the adjacent building.
The building started out life in the then garment district of San Francisco as a factory of neckties, suspenders, and belts by HM Heineman. The problem for architect Applegarth was the diminutive size of the lot, 20 by 80 feet, comparable to a typical house lot. Yet he made the ten story building fit the space most beautifully.
About twenty years later, as the City needed more office space in the downtown area, manufactures started to move to cheaper spaces in the South of Market Area.
As seen 14 September 2022.
