Due to the Earthquake Fire of 1906, a lot of records were permanently lost, it is believed that the Tremont Hotel, opened in 1855, stood on this site at 434 Jackson Street. As the area changed, so did the clientele, and name of the hotel, becoming The White House Hotel, a less fancy hotel.
Also with the lost records, the French Consulate may have had their first home here for a while.
